Fill your kitchen with the comforting aroma of homemade apple pie using Shanez Apple Pie Spice. This warm, fragrant baking-spice blend has been created to complement apples while adding depth to cakes, crumbles, muffins and desserts.
Sprinkle it into apple pie filling, baked apples, apple crumble, pancakes, porridge, yoghurt, custard, doughnuts, biscuits and hot drinks. It can also be stirred through brown sugar before sprinkling over buttered toast or pastries.
Start with 1–2 teaspoons per standard recipe, adding more for a stronger spiced flavour.
Easy Apple Pie Filling Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 kg apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- 100 g brown sugar
- 20 g cornflour
- 2 teaspoons Shanez Apple Pie Spice
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 20 g butter
- 2 sheets shortcrust pastry or one prepared pie shell and pastry top
Method
Preheat oven to 190°C conventional or 170°C fan-forced.
Place the sliced apples in a large bowl.
Add the brown sugar, cornflour, Apple Pie Spice and lemon juice.
Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
Line a 23 cm pie dish with pastry and spoon in the apple mixture.
Dot the butter over the apples.
Cover with the remaining pastry, seal the edges and cut several small steam holes into the top.
Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the apple filling is bubbling.
Rest for at least 20 minutes before serving.
Serve warm with custard, cream or vanilla ice cream.
